In order to stay on top of your visual health, we recommend having an eye test at least every 2 years regardless of your age and physical condition.

Changes to the eye can take place gradually over time, and may not be immediately noticeable to you. If you wear contact lenses, your optometrist will usually recommend that you visit for a eye health check up every 12 months.

Our Comprehensive Eye Exams:

During your eye exam, your optometrist will assess both your vision and the health of your eyes. They will:

Measure your ability to see near and at a distance without visual aids

Test your binocular vision to see how well your eyes work in coordination with each other

Examine your eye’s reaction to colour, light and movement

Detect, monitor and control any eye diseases by testing the pressure of your eye

Assess the retina, blood vessels and top of the optic nerve for any irregularities

Look for ocular signs of general health problems

Based on the outcome of the eye exam, your optometrist will provide their recommendation.

A Guide to Common Eye Conditions that Can Affect Us at Any Age

This information is provided as a reference only and should not be used in place of expert advice from your optometrist.

Long-sightedness

Long-sightedness, also known as hyperopia, is a common vision problem that affects your ability to see up close. Distance vision is usually very clear, but objects that are close-up are more difficult to see clearly. This makes reading and writing more difficult. Long-sightedness can be corrected using spectacle lenses or contact lenses.

Someone who is long-sighted may experience blurred vision, eye fatigue and strain, crossed eyes in children, headaches and poor concentration.

Short-sightedness

Short-sightedness, also known as myopia, is a condition that affects your ability to see clearly in the distance. Distance vision is blurred, but generally you can still see clearly up close. Short-sightedness can be corrected using spectacle lenses or contact lenses.

Someone who is myopic or short-sighted is likely to experience blurred vision when watching or playing sport, looking at the whiteboard, reading street signs and watching television.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is the gradual change in a person’s sight after the age of forty. It is caused by the eye’s inability to focus at short distances. People with the condition often have trouble reading the menu in a restaurant, threading a needle and reading fine print.

Presbyopia can be corrected with spectacle lenses or contact lenses. Multifocal lenses provide natural vision at short and long distances and everything in between. A regular eye exam is required as your ability to focus declines in order to update your lens prescription every few years.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a common and usually minor eye condition that causes blurred or distorted vision. It occurs when the cornea or lens isn’t a perfectly curved shape This causes the light entering the eye to bend more in one direction than the other. In minor cases common symptoms of astigmatism include eyestrain, fatigue, reduced concentration and discomfort while higher degrees of astigmatism can cause images at all distances to be distorted and blurred. Astigmatism is commonly treated using spectacle lenses or contact lenses.

Colour Blindness

‘Colour blindness’ most commonly presents as confusion between red and green. It’s commonly inherited and affect approximately 10% of men, and an extremely small number of women. With this deficiency certain shades of red, green and yellow appear grey but many colours, especially purples and blues will appear normal. Whilst there is no cure for inherited colour vision problems, tinted lenses and lenses that reduce glare may be prescribed to improve contrast between colours.

What You Can Expect From a Routine Eye Examination

During a comprehensive eye test, your optometrist will do more than just determine your prescription. To assess both your vision and the health of your eyes your optometrist will:

Measure your ability to see near and at a distance without visual aids via tests such as reading an eye chart, to determine the strength of lenses required to give you the best vision possible

Examine your eye’s reaction to colour, light and movement

Assess your how both your eyes work together (this is called binocular vision)

Detect, monitor and control any eye diseases by testing the pressure of your eye as well as assessing the retina, blood vessels and top of the optic nerve for any irregularities. More advanced testing may be employed to provide the optometrist with a more accurate view.

Look for ocular signs of general health problems

If a vision problem is identified your optometrists will recommend corrective eyewear or vision training, and may refer you for further assessment where required.

Advanced Eye Tests

Advanced eye tests may be employed during a routine eye exam to give your optometrist a more in depth look at your eye health. These tests are often used in the early detection of eye disease.

RETINAL IMAGING
Retinal imaging is used to assist in the early detection and management of certain eye diseases, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes and hypertension. Essentially, a digital image is taken of the retina, blood vessels and optic nerve located at the back of your eyes and can be completed in a matter of minutes.

OCT SCANNING
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Scanning is used in the early detection of eye diseases. It allows your optometrist to see detailed images of the retina, enabling accurate detection of any changes. It’s completely non-invasive and the equipment never touches the eye, so there is no discomfort.

Children’s Eye Tests

As children often assume their vision is the same as everyone else’s, it’s common for visual problems to go unnoticed. Regular eye testing for children is essential to ensure their vision and eye health is developing normally.

Contact Lens Consultation

Almost every glasses wearer is suitable for contact lenses. If you’re thinking about wearing contacts, your optometrist will book you in for a Contact Lens Consultation to assess your eligibility and to fit you with contact lenses that best suit you and your prescription.
